It’s Official, One Night Stands Are Good For You
There is no longer a need to suffer a mini crisis and down a few stiff drinks every time you have a one night stand because new research has revealed it might actually be good for you.
The study from New York University, published earlier this month, dispels the popular misconception that casual sex leaves participants with low self-esteem and self-worth following a sexual encounter with someone who isn’t a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Students at the U.S university kept a diary over a 12 week period, writing down how they felt after having casual sex – and the results turned out to be very surprising.
The researchers said: ‘When it came to those who were sociosexually unrestricted, having casual sex was associated with higher self-esteem and life satisfaction and lower depression and anxiety.’
It’s now ok for us to treat sex like Joey Tribbiani and not suffer as a consequence
‘Typically, sociosexually unrestricted individuals reported lower distress and higher thriving following casual sex, suggesting that high sociosexuality may both buffer against any potentially harmful consequences of casual sex and allow access to its potential benefits.’
The students who were selected to participarte in the study admitted leaning towards ‘sociosexuality’, a term which basically means that they do not have a problem with having sex outside of a long term relationship.
The other potentially surprising part. There weren’t any notable gender differences.
The research suggests that women enjoy a spot of casual sex just as much as men, which may well be music to some men’s ears.
